The Men
Kanoa Igarashi
Mr Consistent. He’s turning into the new Mick Fanning/Adrianno de Souza of the early 2010’s. Kanoa also spends a ton of time in Portugal, no doubt surfing Supertubos and so knows the wave well.
John John Florence
A no-brainer when it comes to big barreling gnarly beach breaks. He’ll also be livid after falling out of the draw early at Pipe and Sunset.
Jack Robinson
Big, late drop, beach break, gnarly barrels. It’s right up Jack’s alley.
Italo Ferreira
Italo is brilliant in shifty beach break conditions. He hunts around the lineup like a lion in the open Savannah creating opportunity. He’s also off to a fairly lackluster start which means he’ll be hungry to make up some ground at this event.
Joao Chianca
We haven’t seen much of Joao’s surfing but man can the dude ride the barrel. And he’s got some serious heart. Growing up in Brazil means he’ll be confident in those gnarly beach break conditions.
Koloho Andino
Good at airs - good in the barrel. Koloho will be frothing for a result.
Barron Mamiya
Maybe a bit of a risky pick - cause we’ve never seen Barron perform at Supertubos. But the guy’s a Pipe local and is running on a high from his win at Sunset.
Caio Ibelli
How long can Caio keep his roll going? He’s very hot/cold. Either he looks like a complete kook, or he’s landing the gnarliest under-the-lip takeoffs. He’s a risky pick - but with his incredible performance in Hawaii he’ll be feeling the confidence and it’s clear he knows how to win heats. Also, Gabrielle isn’t around to burn him.

The Women
Carissa Moore
Tier A is between, Malia, Brisa and Carissa. And Carissa is by far the better barrel rider, competitor, and general surfer. We also reckon she’ll be wanting to up her barrel riding performance after being kinda out-surfed by the Moana at Pipe.
Tyler Wright
Tyler is a fantastic all-round surfer and a good competitor. She’s also probably one of the better barrel riders in Tier B.
Johanne Defay
No slouch when the waves get gnarly. From France/Reunion she’s probably spent a fair amount of time surfing gnarly beach breaks much like Supertubos.
Tatiana Weston-Webb
After such a stellar performance last year - and coming so close to being world champ - it’s hard to see Tati so far down on the rankings. But she’s a gritty competitor, loves the heavy stuff and has a phenomenal backhand. We’re frothing to see her do well in Portugal.
